I like to work on location in sketchbooks or on loose sheets of paper using ink and watercolour, sometimes incorporating found papers. Travelling with a sketchbook is a continuing source of inspiration and pleasure. More challenging in a way, is a current pre-occupation in maintaining the curiosity and mindset of the traveller closer to home.

In 2016 I discovered Urban Sketchers – an online community of people sketching their own locality, wherever that might be. Inspired, I went on to tutor at the Urban Sketchers Symposium in 2018 and to found a local group – South Cumbria Urban Sketchers – who now meet once a month to sketch in our area.

I sometimes develop sketches, both in watercolour and in mixed media. More exciting to me now is the elusive drawing done on location that feels complete. The most successful images can be taken into print.
